The Future

Adapting to Change. Just when a BI program gets comfortable, something always happens that requires a major adjustment. Recently, Dow Chemical acquired Rohm and Haas, and the two companies are immersed in discussions about how to consolidate their respective BI environments.

In addition, like many SAP customers, Rohm and Haas is trying to create a strategic plan to accommodate SAP’s road map for integrating BI products SAP and Business Objects, which SAP acquired in 2008. As one of SAP’s most successful data warehousing customers, Rohm and Haas is working closely with SAP to incorporate Business Objects tools and functionality within its existing architecture.

Analytics. Before the acquisition by Dow, Rohm and Haas was delivering advanced analytics in areas like pricing optimization and product profitability. The analytics included advanced visualizations, such as bubble charts, band analysis, and motion charts. Unfortunately, the acquisition sidetracked some of this effort. “With the acquisition, people have been coming and going so now they are focused on basic blocking and tackling. We’ll get back to it once the dust settles,” says Masciandaro.

Mobile. The company is also experimenting with delivering basic reports to BlackBerry users. Currently, it delivers two reports to about 100 BlackBerry users. The reports are slimmed down to fit the smart phone. “Delivering business information, especially quickly changing information to an increasingly mobile workforce, helps us react faster to new situations,” says Masciandaro.
